Rare encounter in Varna´s suburbs

start » News » Rare encounter in Varna´s suburbs

So one afternoon, the Silkroad Ensemble jumped in to a bus and headed for Varna´s Western fringe. "Some people told us not to do this", Silkroad musician Dost Matur from Turkey reports. "Usually nobody just walks into a Roma settlement". But the Silkroad Ensemble saw a chance to overcome social barriers and long lasting prejudices. Accompanied by Varna-based photographer Stefan N. Shterev, the Silkroad team stopped right in the middle of the community. Just a couple of minutes later, a little open-air concert began to unfold - attracting hundreds of spectators from nearby shacks and houses. Children started to dance, thoroughfully watched by their mothers. And a Roma musician joined the Silkroad Ensemble spontaneously. "For half an hour, we could witness a highly atmospheric dialogue beyond words", says Silkroad team member Michael Strohmann who documented this rare encounter with his camera, just like Stefan N. Shterev. A very specific experience, no doubt about that. And a touch of magic."
