"The Humboldt-University in Berlin, a place for research and teaching for 200 years,
is looking forward to provide a forum for discussions about the results of Silkroad Experiences,
addressing scientists as well as the general public".
Thomas Richter (Head of public relations, marketing and fundraising department)
Our intention in Silkroad Experiences is to create dialogue between western and eastern cultures on different levels and different fields of interest, using a wide spectrum of means, adjusted to the different target groups and their varying socioeconomic and intellectual background. Basically, it is a communication concept, aiming at the creation of trust. Besides, it is an attempt to define the modern function of expeditions in general. It is not a scientific project, although several scientists are working as advisors for Silkroad Experiences.
The project´s subtitle 'Roads of Dialogue' indicates that there are many ways to meet people and to bring them together for the sake of a tolerant communication.
The concept of 'dialogue' presupposes the intention of all participants to be open for communicative exchange.
Dialogue is much more than the coincidental or inevitable exchange of information.
In Silkroad Experiences, we assume that even though worldwide exchange of information increases, true dialogue between western and eastern cultural spheres doesn´t occur often. Scientists and experts from different fields of knowledge may be able to establish a dialogue for the sake of their professional work, but these are just small groups, usually having the character of inner circles. In most cases, dialogue based on professional contact doesn´t involve ‘outsiders’ or recognize the benefits of mutual understanding. General information channels are not used either:This is a very exclusive form of dialogue. Dialogue requires both communication partners to interact. Having a mutual goal or solving a problem collectively, for example, can provide for equal conditions in terms of participation. This is one of the Silkroad Experiences major approaches.
Dialogue between Europe and Asia can only develop into a fruitful one, if the participants do not only collect facts and state their opinions. Rather, they have to express and question their own interests and needs, laying ground for the perception of the other. If -during an intercultural exchange of ideas- participants do not use the chance to learn about themselves and question their way of thinking, this exchange cannot be considered to be a true and fruitful one. Silkroad Experiences focus on a sort of discussion that includes listening to what others have to say. This does not mean that dialogue partners do have to agree automatically with what is said; in the best case, they eagerly take notice of what the others are saying and they judge arguments without prejudices. The criteria of dialogue cannot be set unidirectional.
To provide dialogue, the Silkroad Team is going to organize workshops for students of all grades and will offer concerts, media events, discussions, art exhibitions and outdoor events. It will also use modern communication devices in order to give as many people as possible a chance to become part of the process.

To build up mutual trust between people from western and eastern cultures is Silkroad Experiences main goal. The Silkroad Team is not neglecting the fact that there are many political, economical and strategical barriers when it comes to achieve peaceful and friendly forms of trading ideas, emotions and beliefs. On the other hand, shaping dialogue between Europe and Asia shouldn´t be the realm of politics and economics. Let´s get people involve, then. The more, the better.
The Silkroad Dialogues will take place in our big event-yurt as public discussions. They are integral part of those cultural events which are performed in selected cities along the expedition route for three days each.
These will be the topics:
Chance by Exchange – Intercultural dialogue as a challenge and chance of the presence.
Social Business – Corporate and individual social responsibility
The New Silk Road – Political vision and reality
Water for Life – Impact of global climate change and new solutions on Resources Management
